More follow-up on reducing the network

I wrote about my efforts to reduce my home network here and here. The original article which got me thinking about reducing things was
How To Green Your Electronics @ TreeHugger. Now, I found another tool to help reduce the power I use. It seems that the good folks over at Intel have gotten tired of taking a lot of heat (sorry, bad pun) about the heat of their CPUs. In addition to the chip designers working to reduce the power consumption of the new CPUs, they have released a tool called powertop which measues parts of the operating system are using the CPU, and thus heat and electricity.

Not only is this green, but it also extends the run-time of the laptop while on batteries.
